2015 – 2017
<quarter> is a project that observes ineffable beauty and non-artificial traces of time, capturing fragmentary moments categorized by the quarters of a year. It is photographed with a smartphone camera which is a tool that allows one to remember moments easily and rapidly yet also in a difficult and slow manner.
While smartphones occupy a significant portion of our lives as a medium for storing memories, it is questionable whether the effortlessly accumulated photos fulfill their original purpose. Through algorithms, smartphones indifferently categorize the past and sometimes present even unwanted moments as if they were special. Amidst such edited truths, we struggle to find meaning and confine our memories within photographs by using them as a means of returning to the past.
Just as a device’s performance diminishes over time, the captured images grow blurred and indistinct but this is merely a limitation of the technical tool. What matters more than the choice of object or tool is the mindset of possessing agency. The attitude of remembering fragmentary moments deeply and slowly originates ultimately from a prepared identity.

<quarter>는 눈에 보이는 형언할 수 없는 아름다움과 비인위적인 시간의 흔적을 바라보고 단편의 순간으로 담아 분기별로 나눠진 작업이다. 손쉽고 빠르지만, 어렵고 느리게도 순간을 기억할 수 있는 스마트폰 카메라로 촬영한다.
일상의 기억을 저장하는 스마트폰은 삶의 큰 비중을 차지하지만, 손쉽게 쌓여가는 사진들이 과연 본연의 기능을 다하고 있는지는 의문이다. 스마트폰은 알고리즘을 통해 과거를 무심하게 분류하며, 때로는 기억하고 싶지 않은 순간조차 특별한 장면인 양 보여준다. 우리는 이처럼 편집된 진실 속에서 무언가를 찾으려 애쓰며 사진 속에 기억을 가두어 보관하고, 이는 곧 과거로 회귀하기 위한 수단이 된다.
시간이 흐름에 따라 기기의 성능이 저하되듯 사진 또한 흐릿하고 불명확해지지만, 이러한 변화는 기술적 도구의 한계일 뿐이다. 중요한 것은 대상이나 도구의 선택보다 주체성을 지닌 마음가짐이다. 단편의 순간을 깊고 느리게 기억하는 자세 또한 결국 준비된 정체성으로부터 비롯된다.
