2015 – 2020

We live in coexistence with trees in Seoul. The existence and disappearance of urban trees are formed by external factors. The question of a tree’s survival is determined by the human convenience rather than the change of nature itself. Nevertheless, trees always live with us. We walk by trees everyday, almost indifferently.
The number of trees planted on streets of Seoul exceed 306,000, and they live in harsh conditions of the city. Humans do not know everything about trees, maybe there is nothing we can do about it. Following the cycle of nature may be the right decision, as unilateral aid may not has been requested.

Have you ever standing and observed the trees for a long time? To learn about trees, you need an observer's perspective. By carefully observing and learning about the trees, one is able to extend it’s relationship with the trees beyond simple visual cognition. As such Trees and humans can communicate in a natural way.

Similar to how humans are not to be classified by different species and sex, trees are also very different amongst each other. We tend to perceive in way that we feel comfortable. It is more important to recognize trees as what they are.
The beginning of a constant interest in an individual is the basic attitude we should have. This attitude becomes a small starting point for trees to form into forests.
Trees are social beings just like humans and are connected within their networks. The forests that they will form will become their community and home. Urban trees and we need forests. Urban forests start from us.

'Seoul Tree’ is a project that shares recognized trees within one’s radius of life and creates a virtual forest based on online maps. People who observe various changes of trees that surround us remember aspects about them, But it is difficult to know all the trees around them.
‘Seoul Tree’ through lets you share the trees you know and look at another tree. We hope that the virtual forest will be a true start in building a practical forest from the trees we shared.
